Caitlin Layer-Gaskell, MSW, LCSW, CCTP, a licensed clinical social worker for Maryville’s Counseling Center, created the Survivors Circle, a weekly confidential support group for Maryville students who identify as survivors of sexual assault, rape, intimate partner violence or harassment.

Director of the exercise science program and assistant professor of exercise science Victor Kizer, CSCS, TSAC-F, helped transition the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Missouri State Clinic to a fully virtual event amidst the coronavirus pandemic, allowing nearly 300 registrants to secure necessary continuing education.

Director of the rehabilitation counseling program and professor of rehabilitation counseling Michael Kiener, PhD, was featured by the Today Show for his expertise in assistive technologies that could help deaf people or people who are hard of hearing communicate while wearing face coverings.

Associate professor of biology Stacy Donovan, PhD, spearheaded Maryville’s presence at the STEAM-ing Up STEM Academy, hosted by the Midwest Education Technology Community. Approximately 125 seventh-grade girls participated in a DNA extraction activity and engaged in conversations about future careers in STEM-related fields.

LaDonna Whitten, PhD, associate professor of nursing, co-authored the article “A Crosswalk Between the Omaha System and Guiding Undergraduate Public Health Nursing Education Documents,” which was published in Public Health Nursing.

Olaide Oluwole-Sangoseni, DPT, PhD, associate professor of physical therapy, was named a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) in Physical Therapy.

Jesse Kavadlo, PhD, professor of English, is a guest writer for PopMatters, a magazine about popular culture. He recently interviewed bestselling author Paul Auster for the publication.

Laura Stevens, director of auxiliary operations has been recognized as the 2018 NACAS Central Regional Mentor award, presented by NACAS, the largest auxiliary and ancillary services support organization serving higher education.

Michelle Jenkins-Unterberg, PT, assistant dean for the Walker College of Health Professions, director of the Physical Therapy program and professor, has been honored with the Helen Holzum Whealen Service Award by the Missouri Physical Therapy Association for lasting and significant contributions to the Eastern District, Missouri Chapter and the profession.

Scott Angus, MFA, associate professor of photography and digital art, spoke about his work at the International Hall of Fame of Photography, Colorado State University, the University of LaVerne, and Metropolitan Community Church in Santa Ana, California. He also received a grant through the Best Foundation to travel to Scotland, England and Ireland to photograph sacred sites.

Jess Bowers, PhD, assistant professor of English, has published a short story, “War Story,” in the inaugural issue of Fearsome Critters: A Millennial Arts Journal, published by Green Tower Press in April-May 2018.

Steve Coxon, PhD, associate professor of education, has been appointed chair of the Advisory Council on the Education of Gifted and Talented Children by the Missouri state commissioner of education.

Darlene Davison, director of the Interior Design program and associate professor, has been named by DesignIntelligence as one of the nation’s Top 25 Most Admired Educators.

Dana Levin, PhD, Distinguished Writer in Residence, has published a poem, “Two Autumns, Saint Louis,” in the eco-poetics folio of The Kenyon Review (May/June issue). Levin also served as a featured faculty member at the Idyllwild Writers Week held in July at Idyllwild Arts Academy in California.

Steve Mandeville, EdD, was named a 2018 CFO of the Year by the St. Louis Business Journal. The awards honor financial professionals in the St. Louis region for outstanding performance.

Ann Fick, DPT, CCS, associate professor of physical therapy, co-authored an article published in American Journal of Critical Care, “Effects of Ambulation and Nondependent Transfers on Vital Signs in Patients Receiving Norepinephrine.”

Nina Caldwell, EdD, vice president for student life, has been recognized as a Distinguished Leader in the 2017 Delux 100 Power Awards presented by Delux magazine for exemplary leadership in the St. Louis community and extraordinary professional achievements.

Stacy Hollins, PhD, associate professor of information systems, has received a 2017 Delux Power 100 Award, presented by Delux magazine, as one of the St. Louis region’s most inspiring and influential African American professionals.

A poem by Dana Levin, Distinguished Writer-in-Residence, is mentioned in this PBS News Hour story as one of the most powerful poems in Bullets Into Bells: Poets & Citizens Respond to Gun Violence, an anthology meant to serve as a vehicle for conversation on gun violence and empathy for survivors. The book was co-edited by writer Brian Clements, the husband of a Sandy Hook survivor.

Kelly Mock, EdD, director of academic advising and life coaching, and Maxwell Artis, life coach, presented at the recent NACADA conference. Their presentation explored the integration and success of Maryville’s Life Coach program. NACADA is the national academic advising association.

Jennifer Henry, LPC, director of personal counseling, has received the Founder’s Award, presented by the Missouri Eating Disorders Association. The Founders Award recognizes leadership, collaboration and community involvement and is awarded to those making a difference in the community through education and awareness of eating disorders.

Charles J. Gulas, PhD, dean of the Walker College of Health Professions, has been selected by the Associated Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP) Board of Directors as an ASAHP Fellow for his leadership and significant contributions to allied health.

Loretta Colvin, APRN-BC, coordinator of the Online Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program in the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing, served as chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s committee tasked with developing educational materials for nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Colvin also spoke at the annual Association of Missouri Nurse Practitioners and the Sleep Professionals of Arkansas. She served as co-faculty for a joint American Association of Nurse Practitioners and American Association of Physician Assistants educational session focusing on the treatment of insomnia.

Michael Kiener, PhD, director of the Rehabilitation Counseling program and professor of rehabilitation counseling, has been elected to a three-year term on the Missouri board for the Association of People Supporting Employment First.

Konrad Dias, DPT, PhD, CCS, professor of physical therapy, recently published an article in the Current Geriatrics Reports journal, “Best Practice for Home Physical Therapy for Older Adults with Heart Failure.”

Turan Mullins, assistant dean for diversity and inclusion, has been named a 2018 Young Leader by the St. Louis American Foundation.

Jesse Kavadlo, PhD, professor of English, was a featured speaker at the 2017 Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference. His talk: “Psycho, Fargo, Frodo: On Quests, Maguffins, and Middles (with Digressions).”

Caren Schlossberg-Wood, graphic design instructor, had a series of typographic collages featured in “The Professional Practice of Illustration and Design,” an exhibit at Anderson University featuring works by design education professionals.

Guangwei Fan, PhD, professor of actuarial science, and Yuanjin Liu, PhD, assistant professor of actuarial science, co-authored a paper, “Weighted Fund Style Analysis of Variable Annuity,” published in Actuarial Research Clearing House, a publication of the Society of Actuaries Education and Research Section.

Vaughn Anderson, PhD, assistant professor of English, published a paper, “‘Revision of the Golden Rule’: John Cage, Latin America, and the Poetics of Non-Interventionism,” in Journal of Modern Literature.

Sarah Lust, PhD, assistant professor of psychology, co-authored a paper, “Predictors of Short-term Change After a Brief Alcohol Intervention for Mandated College Drinkers,” published in Addictive Behaviors, an international peer-reviewed journal.

Ann Fick, DPT, CCS, associate professor of physical therapy, co-authored an article published in American Journal of Critical Care, “Effects of Ambulation and Nondependent Transfers on Vital Signs in Patients Receiving Norepinephrine.”
